The human microbiome, an ecosystem under threat.

The microbiome is a vast and teeming ecosystem populated by trillions of microbial cells, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. Each is dependent upon others to sustain a complete and healthy whole, perfectly suited to support our immune system. Just as the earth’s ecosystems are under threat from man’s misuse of the environment, the human microbiome is under threat.

The threat arises from many angles, including the overuse of antibiotics and acid-reducing drugs, formula feeding and lack of exposure to environmental microorganisms. Collectively these influences have taken a toll on our beneficial microbes, in some cases wiping them out, thus contributing to the rise of obesity, diabetes and asthma, among other diseases.

We now know that the future of medicine is holistic. We must take care of the human body by taking care of the human microbiome.
